Made with Love

George Town Heritage Hotels was created with my love of my culture and heritage. Growing up in a Straits Chinese family where both paternal and maternal grandmothers were very traditional sarong wearing, betel nut and sirreh chewing matriarchs, I couldn’t help being siphoned into their curious world which centred around familial and religious traditions including celebrating the feast days and death anniversaries of their immediate ancestors as well as the pantheon of divinities out there. The constant preparations and exchange of information via their web of relationships kept us as well informed and connected as the social media of today. I was definitely sucked into their world with my overactive creative mind.

Fuelled by Passion

My love for the world they lived in stayed with me while I worked and travelled the world to finish off my study of decorative arts. George Town Heritage Hotels is the culmination of my lifetime of interest, passion and study into the Peranakan Chinese material culture, art and architectural style.

Hospitality through our hotels and restaurants and cafes are the natural extension of my efforts to adapt the buildings to be backdrops for my personal collections to showcase my Peranakan Chinese antiques and objects of art primarily from Georgetown. The motivation is to preserve and make relevant the Straits Chinese cultural period for reference, study and simplistically to keep the motherlode here in George Town.

The economic power of our gigantic neighbours always dwarfs any NGO or individual efforts to succeed here but someone like me had to try to amass a decent quantity of artefacts to show not all has been lost.

Driven by Purpose

All of what I have accumulated and amassed will have a game plan. The businesses are established and to be run like institutions into the future to be self-funded into the Foundation that they will be part of and the purpose is going back to what I love and cherish for the future generations from my childhood here in Georgetown.

It’s a second chance to recognise the contribution of the Chinese community who acculturated and assimilated themselves into the local Anglo Indian Malay culture they adopted.

Experience It Now

Get lost in nature, stay in an eco-lodge and enjoy a sustainable farm experience.

Made with Love

Our journey began in 2008 when we put down the down payment for our farm without having the slightest inkling of what farming entailed. What convinced us to continue with what the previous three generations of farmers did before us was the taste of the fruits and eggs which came with the farm. The taste of the produce was vastly different from the ones bought from our usual stores.

It was a taste which brought us back to our grandparents’ time where eggs actual had such a rich taste on its own and could be eaten without soy sauce. The fruits from this farm had such a huge range of flavours. We could really eat the durians and rambutans without fear of having sore throats the next day. We felt like we had stumbled on a goldmine of how nature intended her fruits of labour to taste like.

As we continued our journey of relearning how conscientious farmers brought their products to the table, we decided that it would be of great injustice to these brands of farmers if we did not do anything to share their pride and knowledge they had in their production of chemical free food. That’s how we came about to open the doors of our farm to share the taste of food and preserve the local knowledge of traditional farming which we now call organic farming.

Fuelled with Passion

If you have somewhere where you can exercise in a rejuvenating environment and your exercise provides you with great tasting food, then it’s a 360 degree ‘chiak kah liau’ (win win) situation. Living the good life should be the goal now and not when you’re retired.

Driven by Purpose

A few years ago, we conducted a little survey with 50 random kids under the age of 12. We asked the kids which of the two types of half boiled eggs they preferred. Type A – supermarket (Tesco) eggs. Type B – eggs from our free-range chickens. 80% of the kids preferred type A eggs. Type B eggs had a strong taste and smell which they were not used to.

When our younger generation picks food which are mass produced, we are not doing justice to them. We need to allow them to make better choices. To give the kids the tools to choose, we need them to come to the farm and experience for themselves how good food is grown and how we need to be more sustainable in growing our own food.

Made with Love

In the late 19th century, the great tycoon Cheong Fatt Tze aspired to build a house that would house his descendants in majestic elegance. The era’s leading Feng Shui master was consulted; artisans shipped in from Southern China; materials brought in from as far as Scotland. The result is a unique, eclectic, five-courtyard architectural stunner.

Rockfeller of the East, J.P. Morgan of China and the Last Mandarin & First Capitalst of Chine – these names and salutations bear only a fragment of Cheong Fatt Tze’s well-rounded stature and personality.

After Cheong’s passing in 1916, the mansion fell into gradual disrepair and after the passing of his last son, it was sold to a small group of Penang conservationists passionate about restoring the mansion to its former glory.

Today, the mansion is one of George Town’s most iconic and most visited attractions – guests do the daily historic tour, dine at its restaurants, or choose to stay in one of 18 rooms and 2 townhouses.

Fuelled with Passion

Leading the restoration team, architect Laurence Loh sought to tread lightly and touch softly, spending six years in a detailed process to preserve as much as possible of the original structure. What needed restoration or replacement was done with the view to retain traditional methods, such as the Chien Nien cut and paste artworks decorating the gables.

Primarily using Penang artisans and local materials, the principle approach was to retain with the application of traditional methods, with minimal modern interventions in line with the restorative philosophy of ‘treading lightly and touching softly’

Driven by Purpose

Cheong Fatt Tze – The Blue Mansion seeks to maintain its status not just as the city’s premier attraction and hotel, but also as a world-renowned architectural wonder, sharing the beauty and energy of the mansion through not just its tours, accommodations and restaurants but also through its unique offerings at the gift shop, and a curated calendar of exciting arts and culture events such as musical performances, plays and exhibitions , so as to continue to inspire as many as possible.

The Mansion embodies a confluence of Hakka and Teochew styles along with intrinsic Southern Chinese typologies and materials.
