Christian and Jason first encountered the challenges of syncing audio for large events while screening their 2017 feature film, Jimami Tofu, outdoors at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
With an audience of over 2,000 people, they noticed that the sound reached the back of the venue later than the picture. “To address this, you need an array of speakers that speed up the audio for those at the back, but that can cause an echo. We knew there had to be a better solution,” Christian said.
Determined to solve the problem, Christian and Jason assembled a team of engineers and developed the Cinewav app, which earned them a U.S. patent.
Cinewav provides a library of movies from major studios like Disney, Pixar, Marvel, 20th Century Studios, Sony, and Fox Network Group, as well as international films. The app allows viewers to switch between dubbed languages with a tap, even while the movie is playing.
Christian explains that this technology makes it easy for grassroots organizations to host movie screenings for fundraisers with minimal equipment, staff, or expertise. It also offers independent producers like himself a broader reach for their films.
"This cinema was just a small dream three years ago. My co-founder and I walked around Singapore in search of white walls because we couldn’t afford a large inflatable screen. We began creating an app to deliver synced audio to the big screen, but no one believed it would work. So, we were forced to create our own cinema.
With just a small projector, a laptop, and a white wall, we made it happen. People started coming and paying for the experience, and now, when we bring friends and partners, it never gets old seeing their expressions as they experience the magic of the big screen with immersive audio from Cinewav in such a unique setting.
