As you join WiT Indie in Penang, we’d like to introduce you to a community that is passionate about what they do—this is the spirit we strive for. “Indie” stands for independence, and we’ve curated a series of tours for you to explore Penang alongside other delegates.
We’ve planned your morning with a CineWav audio tour led by Chris, continuing from the last edition where Siew Hoon shared her next-generation story. This time, we shift our focus to Muntri Street, where the Hainanese Temple is located.
Chris will share his personal story, offering you a deeper insight into the rich cultural tapestry of Muntri Street. Known for its significant, and at times, bloody history, the street was the site of clan wars in the 19th century. However, it also boasts some of Penang’s best-preserved Straits Eclectic-style houses. Who better to guide us through this fascinating history than Chris Ong?
Chris is a hotelier and the owner of George Town Heritage Hotels. His family’s deep connection to this street, combined with his passion for Penang’s heritage, shines through in the work he does.
After the tour, we’ll enjoy a lunch curated specifically by Chris – Mews Cafe’s Asam Laksa .
A personal story told by one of Penang’s first-generation daughters and travel journalist, Yeoh Siew Hoon.
After lunch, we will be checking out Fort Cornwallis, a key historical landmark in Penang. This site is currently undergoing an exciting transformation. This tour led by Loh Lim Lin Lee, a pioneering storyteller and conservator renowned for her work on the Blue Mansion, is transforming Fort Cornwallis from its previous reputation as a “boring” attraction into a must-visit destination.
Today, she is bringing her knack of storytelling and love of history to the RM20 million Fort Cornwallis restoration project, spearheaded by the George Town Conservation and Development Corporation, a collaborative venture between the Penang Chief Minister Incorporated and Think City, with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture serving as the technical advisor.
Lin Lee’s role in the project is “museology and interpretation”.

As we continue into the evening, we will head to Teluk Bahang, where we’ll participate in creating a traditional local artwork as a collective piece. This event aims to raise funds for underprivileged children’s educational needs.
