In 2024, Joel co-founded the "Ban Ban Kia: Penang Shop Signs" project, aiming to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Penang's shop signs. The project featured walking tours, exhibitions, talks, and workshops during the George Town Festival, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship and cultural significance of these signs.
Through "Ban Ban Kia," Joel seeks to raise awareness about the disappearing trade of Penang's shop signs and to encourage appreciation for this unique aspect of the city's heritage
